UNESCO World Heritage Site
It was inscribed in 2012 under the Natural Heritage category. The designation covers 39 serial sites across Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. UNESCO recognized it for its exceptional biodiversity, high endemism, and unique ecosystems, making it one of the world’s most important ecological regions.

The Western Ghats, India’s “Spice Bowl,” have a rich history of spices, especially black pepper and cardamom, driving ancient trade routes and global exploration for millennia, with black pepper cultivation (Piper nigrum) dating back to 2000 BCE and cardamom (the “Queen of Spices”) being a prized native wild treasure
